And there dozens, if not hundreds, of different organizations (independent ones) that dispute the legitimacy of Russian elections, and dozens of different groups that publish lists of Russian political prisoners. The hotel was on a corner with large windows on the Main Street and a side street. At dark the perimeter of the hotel was patrolled by an armed guard. I asked the front desk why a guard was needed. I was told that the police are referred to as “Wolves”. You don’t call “Wolves” when you have a problem because it’s likely to get worse. I noticed that sometime after 2AM the guard would pass out in a storefront on the side street with a bottle in hand. I went to The Hermitage museum. The line was easily over 1,000 people. An older woman picked me out of line and told me I was an American. She whisked me to the front of the line and paid off two people to get me into the building. Then, she told me how much it would cost for her to be my interpreter and I didn’t have a choice. While working in St. Petersburg I figured out that our engineers were working for multiple companies. Our original office was in the Physics Department at the University of St. Petersburg. The Department head illegally leased out the lab space.
